As a teenager I worked at Tropical Smoothie Cafe, and the Health Nut (previously known as the Healthy Man) Smoothie became one of my favorites. This copy cat recipe is actually much better because it doesn’t have sugar added to it like the one at TSC.
This smoothie is packed with protein, antioxidants and fiber and makes a great meal replacement.
Finding the Right Protein Powder
If you aren’t a fan of protein powder, I would encourage you to keep trying it. I can tell you from experience that it is a bit of an acquired taste. Also try different brands and bases. Plant-based pea, rice and hemp proteins are very popular right now. Soy is not recommended, especially for women and whey is a problem for people with dairy aversions.
I’ve been enjoying a plant-based organic vanilla protein powder with chia seeds called Orgain, (also available for a great price at Sam’s Club if you happen to have a membership).
What Are You Blending In?
I recently bought a new blender and I am IN LOVE. Research for this purchase was weeks long. I wanted a powerful blender that had the potential of a Vitamix without the price tag. A Ninja was not my first choice because their customer service and product guarantee is disappointing.
Dreaming big, I sought an appliance that would satisfy multiple needs: blender, food processor, and blend-in smoothie cups. Dishwasher safe was a must. Sounds like an impossible request right? I thought so too, until I discovered the Oster BLSTVB-103-000 Versa 1100-watt Professional Performance Blender with Two 20-Ounce Blend’N Go Cups. Seriously. All my dreams come true. This sucker is loud but boy does it do a fine job of blending. The shredder and slicing attachments are amazing, along with the food processor bowl. I have even tried whole fruit juicing (this produces a juice that is thicker because you are not removing the pulp from the fruit). This blender does an excellent job! I have blended apples, kale, and spinach which I would have never done in my old blender, and the Oster Versa handled it wonderfully. If you’ve been looking for the perfect blender/food processor that won’t leave your wallet crying for months, this is it!
Health Nut Smoothie (a Tropical Smoothie Cafe copy-cat recipe)
- 1 2 ounce scoop of vanilla protein powder
- 1/2 frozen* banana
- 1/2 cup frozen* blueberries
- 1/2 cup frozen* mango cubes
- 2 Tablespoons fine almond meal/flour
- 1/2 cup whole milk or almond milk*
- 1/2 cup water
Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.
Tropical Smoothie’s original “Healthy Man version did not use milk, but instead used a thin, pumpable vanilla yogurt. I simply opted for milk because I always have some kind of milk in my fridge, but don’t always have yogurt. If you prefer to leave out the milk, you can use 1/4 cup of vanilla yogurt and increase the water to 3/4 cup if needed OR just leave the dairy out altogether and add more water.
